Lameness Exams

Lameness issues can range from straightforward to more complex concerns. The following tests may be performed to further evaluate lameness in your horse:

  • Evaluation of gait on a lunge line on our lunging pad and walking/trotting “in-hand” on grass and/or hard surface.
  • Examine the condition of the horse’s feet (hoof testers may be used).
  • Flexion tests (stressing different joints to localize pain).
  • Once the lame limb is identified, sequential peri-neural blocking can more specifically locate the area of the leg affected.
  • Digital x-rays of the affected area.
  • Ultrasound to assess ligaments and soft tissue.
