Yes, it is safe for the vast majority of pets. Before your pet goes under anesthesia, we conduct a complete set of tests to make sure they are a good candidate for the medicine, and to calculate the right amount for their weight, age and overall health condition.
The main difference between the two is that under local anesthesia, the patient will still be awake while the area to be treated will be completely numb; with general anesthesia, your pet will be asleep. The type of anesthesia chosen varies between each pet. General anesthesia is typically used for dental cleanings/extractions, soft-tissue surgery, spays and neuters, etc.
Although all patients are different, there are common actions you can watch out for. Most pets will seem fatigued and sleepy after their surgery due to the lingering effects of anesthesia. Mild whining or crying is also normal as they may feel slight discomfort before their pain medications take effect. Some pets even experience nausea and vomiting. These are all normal side effects that usually subside in a matter of hours or a few days.
