Monitoring your pet's health is vital because they may not show obvious signs of illness.
Our veterinarians are eagle-eyed when it comes to observing the smallest abnormalities on your pet’s body, the way they move or their behaviour. But there are certain aspects of your pet’s health that can only be viewed and analyzed through further testing such as bloodwork. Here at South Shore Veterinary Services, we have an in-clinic laboratory that allows us to perform general blood tests for all our patients. They may feel a slight sting or discomfort but it is a relatively pain-free procedure. It takes only a matter of seconds for us to draw the blood and no numbing or anesthesia is required. It’s similar to getting a vaccination shot.
The chemistry panel and complete blood count can give us valuable insight on a number of things like your pet’s hydration, cholesterol levels, immune system, blood clotting ability, any infections or parasites (e.g. heartworm), any underlying conditions (e.g. anemia, kidney problems) and more.
