There are many parasites that can pose a problem for your pet.
A few of them are:
Internal
- Coccidia
- Tapeworm
- Roundworm
- Hookworm
- Whipworm
- Heartworm
- Giardia
External
- Earmites
- Fleas
- Ticks
- Lice
Some of these can also infect humans. Zoonotic diseases are diseases that are transmitted from animals to humans. These parasites can be contracted by accidental ingestion or penetrating through the skin. A common way for exposure can be through sandboxes and gardening. Dogs and cats defecate in the soil or sand and then we come in contact with it.
You can prevent these parasites from becoming a health concern for you and your pet by cleaning up after your pet regularly. Administering monthly parasite prevention to your pet is also a good way to decrease your risk. Covering sandboxes and wearing gloves while gardening can prevent exposure as well. And be sure to wash your hands regularly!
